the concept of the cocoon hotel is a âsoftâ hotel in a âhardâ industrial environment.
It is in contrast, in nature and form, to its sister Hotel – the Silo Hotel, where the âsoftâ furnishings are inside a âhardâ industrial relic.
The Cocoon Hotel is a new structure that connects to the recycled Silo Hotel, via an elevated umbilical connection.
The Hotel rooms are divided into two components: the âskinâ rooms and the âcubesâ.
The skin rooms are situated around the perimeter of the building and are enclosed by a tensile fabric skin, which allows the entire building to breathe.
The âskinâ can be opened electronically, per room.
This expresses the living nature of the building as an organism externally.
This skin will always be changing, responding to each inhabitantâs needs.
The cube rooms are a superimposed separate structure inside the cocoon, comprising internalised rooms.
The planning and shape of the cocoon is responsive to the relationship with the Amphitheatre.
The Hotel suites are designed to function as viewing âboxesâ for the performances in the Amphitheatre.
skin rooms
The skin rooms are situated around the perimeter of the building and are enclosed with a tensile fabric skin.
This skin opens and closes at the wishes of the guests. It is electronically controlled.
Curtains are therefore, not needed, as the skin gives full privacy.
Each room has its own garden terrace, which incorporates a vertical garden. This structure is solid to maintain full privacy.
The adjacent floor is perforated to allow air movement vertically between the rooms and into the main structure.
This allows the irrigation system to be more effective with optimum usage of water.
The terraces have a timber deck floor to reinforce the natural experience.
This green space between pairs of rooms allows each room to be a âcornerâ room, i.e. glass walls on two sides.
To exaggerate this, glass shower cylinders protrude out into the private garden terrace, creating a natural outdoor shower experience.
All this on the upper floor of a hotel in an Industrial area!
the cubes
The cube rooms are a superimposed separate structure inside the cocoon, comprising internalised rooms.
Here three 3mx3mx3m cubes form one room comprising an office, bedroom and full bathroom.
These will be sound proof, thereby unaffected by the performances in the Amphitheatre.
They will be hi-tech havens offering cutting edge interface technology.
The cubes will glow externally as the electronic key is inserted.
On exiting, the room will âshut downâ, reducing energy consumption.
